Today's 40 Minute Run

Guided run with Coach Bennett

Notes

Tuesday, 9 June 2026

Recently, someone to whom I opened up told me she feels like she’s hurting me and she doesn’t want to. Well, I thought to myself, it’s inevitable to hurt the other every once in a while in any kind of relationship. And it is OK as long as it’s not the norm.

A few days later when I was doing my easy run listening to Coach Bennett on the Today’s 40 Minute Run, he dropped a truth bomb:

It’s okay to be hurting on a run, but it’s not okay to be in pain.

What caught my ears is how he said “be hurting”, which is continuous present, indicating a short, temporary situation. While he used “be in pain” in simple present, which indicates an elongated or permanent fact.

I can’t recall whether the Coach trailed the above line with his famous catchphrase or not, but in a fraction of a second I relived the message she sent me a couple days ago. So it felt imminent that I was about to hear it:

This is about running. This is not about running.
